Commentary: How We Fight: The Tools to Protect American Forests
Dr. Jiri Hulcr wrote a piece for The Forestry Source, December 2019. Jiri is an Associate Professor of forest entomology at the University of Florida. He is one of ProForest's founding members.
How We Fight: The Tools to Protect American Forests - Jiri's commentary draws the current landscape of forestry research. The majority of this research is applied - it seeks to answer specific questions as quickly as possible. Jiri asks that we do more basic research to answer larger questions. What makes a southern pine beetle tick? How does it communicate? What do its larvae eat? He says that without answering these types of questions, we won't know how to develop tools to fight against this important pest.
