ProForest Members Talk Laurel Wilt on Plantopia Podcast
Jiri Hulcr and Dave Coyle were featured on the Plantopia Podcast by the American Phytopathological Society. Plantopia was inspired by the United Nations declaration of 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health.
Hulcr and Coyle share the story of laurel wilt, a deadly disease of trees in the Laurel family. It is caused by a fungus that's spread by the non-native redbay ambrosia beetle. The disease has crept its way across the southeast, killing trees like redbay, sassafras, and avocado. Proactive measures need to be taken to prevent laurel wilt from going south of the border to Mexico, the world's largest producer of avocado and beyond to South America where there are hundreds of plants in the Laurel family.
